Sustainability Initiatives

Our Social Responsibility

In our commitment towards becoming a sustainable organization, we are focused on establishing and nurturing the foundation of growth for the next generation. That is why we remain devoted towards community investment and embracing inclusion and diversity for all people.

As a business, we have made a concerted effort to step beyond societal expectations of solely offering services in return for profit, to building long-term relationships necessary to offer the latest technology and create innovative solutions to reach our stakeholders who were previously left out.

In our commitment towards becoming a sustainable organization, we are focused on establishing and nurturing the foundation of growth for the next generation. That is why we remain devoted towards community investment and embracing inclusion and diversity for all people.

SDG 5 – GENDER EQUALITY — EMPOWERING AND INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WOMEN IN THE TECH, ENERGY AND ICT SPACE

Currently Adrian Kenya has a workforce comprising of 30% women and is driving the agenda of empowering more women through various programs in the HR Department. This include the EEO program, Two-Third Gender Rule initiative, and Women Empowerment.

In 2019, we facilitated a Women in Business Training to step up progress towards empowering women-run businesses. We also support women owned businesses amongst our suppliers within our procurement database. Currently 20% of suppliers are run by women, who are offered training in technology, strategy and business planning.

Towards empowering young women, we created the Adrian Tech Ambassador Program for young women graduates, which takes them through training in leadership, sales and marketing. In 2019, 15 out of 20 women who went through this training, joined as full time employees. In addition, we run a management training programme for capacity development for Adrian’s 2020 to 2023 strategic plan out of which 50% were women.

SDG 8 – DECENT WORK & ECONOMIC GROWTH

As a business we put people first – community, clients and our teams. One of the ways we contribute to value creation for society and the economy is by using technology to promote education at work, communication, health and wellbeing through our integrated platforms.

Our footprint spans both rural and urban areas and we remain committed to serving the society, and actively identifying the needs of the communities around our project sites. To address the existing skills gap in rural areas our operations team have developed a 6 month internal technical training programme that equips youth – aged 25 to 35 -with basic technical skills required to service and maintain telco infrastructure. In addition we have put in place internal policies that promote the creation of jobs in the communities we go into. This has seen us create over 600 jobs in our casual labor force.

We are committed towards ensuring equal employment opportunities and don’t discriminate person living with disabilities. In line with this, we have allocated resources that improve access and support diversity.

SDG 15 – LIFE ON LAND

As a business we recognise the importance of protecting and restoring our environment ecosystem. Informed by this we introduced a tree planting culture around all our BTS construction sites. To date our BTS division has constructed over 1000 towers across Kenya. We now realize the there’s an opportunity for us to contribute to reforestation as we deploy telco infrastructure. Our strategy for this is an initiative to plant 50 trees for every tower that we erect.

Similarly, as we promote quality education we have identified an opportunity for students to contribute to the same cause through a tree plating programme dubbed “Mwanafunzi Adopt–a–tree”. This has been rolled out successfully in schools around Meru and Coast Regions. Collectively Adrian’s goal is to have planted over 25,000 trees by 2023.
